The fort which houses five palaces, contains one-third of the city's total population and decorated with latticework screens (Jali), exquisite carvings and murals painted on arches.

» The Jain Temples : The three ancient Jain temples situated inside the fort are dedicated to Rishabhdevji, Sambhavanathji and the Ashthapadi. The exquisitely sculptured temples which contain the emerald icon of Lord Mahavira are a main tourist attraction of the area.

» Patwon Ki Haveli : Built between 1800 and 1860, the five suites of the Patwon Ki Haweli are a fine example of the mastery of Jaisalmer's architects. The beautiful structure with its ornately carved pillars and painted walls is a sight to behold.

Visit Jaisalmer» Desert Culture Centre and Museum : The culture centre and museum houses a rare collection of old coins, traditional Rajasthani musical instruments, textiles and a number of artefacts that provide a deep insight into the history of the place.

» Salim Singh Ki Haveli : Another munificent structure of the city, the Salim Singh Ki Haveli, though not in its complete form since the time when it was built, still has the power to mesmerise the tourists with its unique charm.

Besides visiting the old forts and palaces and the numerous historical monuments of the city, Jaisalmer offers the tourists a lot of other things to do. Plan an excursion to the nearby city of Lodurva (16 km), famous for its great Jain temple, or visit the Akal Wood Fossil Park, which takes you back in time, thousands of years to the period when the entire Thar region lay under water. Get on a shopping spree in Jaisalmer which is famous for its unique embroidery, mirror work, blankets and fine antiques. If you want to experience the culture of the city, plan your trip around the Desert Festival, held between January and February.
